ProStart Minnesota LogoEarly on the morning of Tuesday, March 8, school buses will pull up in front of the RiverCentre in Saint Paul and begin unloading. Students, educators and mentors will bustle equipment and supplies into the site of the 2022 Minnesota ProStart Invitational. The competition is about to begin!

Each year, ProStart teams from across the state gather to compete in for the chance to represent Minnesota at the National ProStart competition in Washington D.C. It’s all a part of the Hospitality Minnesota Education Foundation’s ProStart program in more than 100 Minnesota high schools. Read on and be inspired by our industry’s future leaders.

The HMEF MN State ProStart Invitational showcases the culinary and academic talents of Minnesota high school students enrolled in ProStart programs. Each school is permitted to bring up to two teams.

A team consists of two to four students plus an alternate and can be a mix of sophomores, juniors and seniors. Each team may compete in either the culinary and management team competitions or both. The competition follows the rules of the National ProStart Invitational, and includes two areas of competition:

  • A culinary competition where teams have one hour to prepare a three-course meal while being judged on knife skills, sanitation, menu presentation, taste and teamwork.
  • A management competition where teams present a business proposal for a new restaurant concept, including menu, price structure, marketing plan and other considerations.

Awards are given in the following categories:
— ProStart State Culinary Competition Winners
— ProStart State Management Competition Winners
— Best Knife Skills
— Creative Secret Ingredient
— Essence of Taste
— Team Spirit
